Aluminum Ladder

There are all kinds of ladders available, including rope ladders, step ladders and extension ladders, and permanently mounted fixed ladders.

Ladders are made of many different substances, and include rope ladder, wood ladder, steel ladder and aluminum. I prefer aluminum ladders for most purposes, both because I’m accustomed to them and they are light, durable, and don’t need any special care. As compared to the wooden ladders I grew up with and around, they never need painting, they don’t rot, and they are lighter as well. Aluminum ladders are also lighter and less expensive than fiberglass ladders.

Ladders are not remotely new; have been around forever. According to Wikipedia, "A ladder is depicted in a Mesolithic rock painting that is at least 10,000 years old."

The aluminum extension ladders, aluminum step ladder, and aluminum library ladder are all popular types, and there are many well known and widely available brands including Werner ladder.

Extension ladders have two or more rows of steps that slide together in sections for easy storage and portability. They come in various sizes and some can extend as high as 40 feet, although these will be pretty heavy and are not common for home use. Home extension ladders are most commonly 16 or 24 foot ladders. Pads should be at the top of the ladder to avoid scratching the surface the ladder rests on. Extension ladders will have a weight rating, and most are rated to hold around 250 pounds.

Extension ladders are usually raised in their retracted position, and then raised to the desired height using their included pulley and rope system. Always climb an extension ladder facing the ladder, and beware of overhead power lines and wind. I once had the wind blow down a lightweight aluminum extension ladder when I was on the roof! I was trapped for about an hour until my wife came looking for me. I prefer to have someone standing at the base for safety when I climb.

Step ladders are folding ladders that are easily transported and self supporting. They support themselves by spreading like scissors to support their weight and balance themselves. They come in various heights from about 3 feet to 10 feet and above. Aluminum step ladders are very common as they are light and durable, but older ones are made of wood and some are made of fiberglass as well. These are ideal for changing light bulbs, indoor painting and wall papering, and most indoor tasks as well as many outdoor tasks. They are not as tall as extension ladders. It’s important to set them up carefully in a fairly flat area. I once took a nasty fall off my lightweight aluminum step ladder in the woods. Although I didn’t fall far, I landed on my back on a large rock and it hurt for a long time! I hadn’t taken enough care setting the ladder up as I was in a hurry.

Be very careful with ladders of all types. You can fall and die or electrocute yourself, not to mention “Three Stooges” type accidents as well! I am not and do not claim to be a ladder safety expert so get expert advice and use your common sense as well. This can save your life! Aluminum ladder safety is important as is safety with any ladder or tool!
